Every summer, Caleta de Famara celebrates one of the dates that marks the local calendar. The Romería Marinera brings together residents, families and visitors in a warm, community-centred celebration with a strong sense of identity. It is a festival enjoyed at an unhurried pace, shaped by the sea and the atmosphere of the village.
The tradition is tied to the area’s fishing past, when the first residents built the small hermitage. Over time, that modest celebration grew while keeping its essence: a gathering in which the community accompanies its patron image and shares a special day beside the Atlantic.
The origins
The origins of the romería go back to the early 20th century. The first residents held simple events around the hermitage and, over the years, the celebration gradually took shape until it became one of the most eagerly awaited events of the summer.
The maritime procession
The most special moment comes when the image leaves the hermitage and makes its way through the village to the harbour. There, amid applause and music, it is placed on a boat and begins its journey around the bay, accompanied by dozens of escorting vessels.
From the shore, the scene is distinctive: the patron image sailing in front of the Risco while boat horns and the ocean breeze complete one of the most anticipated moments of the year.

Alongside the procession, the August festivities fill the streets with activities for different tastes. There is sport, music, open-air dances and gatherings that combine tradition with the Caleta’s young, surf-oriented atmosphere.
